UNESCO Chairs' workshop
“CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAM IN THE CONTEXT OF CONTEMPORARY CULTURE”

On the 2nd and 3rd of June 2009, in the St. Petersburg Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences and at the facilities of the UNESCO Chair on Comparative Studies of Spiritual Traditions, their Specific Cultures and Interreligious Dialogue, researchers from the University of Saint Joseph (Beirut, Lebanon) joined with researchers from the St. Petersburg Branch of the Russian Institute for Cultural Research for a Russian-Lebanese UNESCO Chairs Workshop dedicated to deliberating the joint collective monograph “Christianity and Islam in the Context of the Contemporary Culture”, co-authored by the Russian and Lebanese researchers with support from the UNESCO Moscow Office and the UNESCO Beirut Office within the UNESCO/UNITWIN Network on Interreligious Dialogue for Multicultural Understanding.

The participants in the Workshop were: Ms Frances Albernaz (Programme Specialist, Culture Sector, UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France); Ms Liubava Moreva (Programme Officer, Culture Sector, UNESCO Moscow Office for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, the Republic of Moldova, and the Russian Federation); Mr Joseph Kreidi (Programme Officer, Culture Sector, Focal Point for Recovery and Reconstruction, UNESCO Regional Bureau, Beirut, Lebanon); Mr Edward Tropp (Principal Scientific Secretary, St. Petersburg Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia); and Mr. Vladimir Zhidkov (Head of the Sector for Humanities and Social Sciences at Russian Foundation for Basic Research, Moscow, Russia). The UNESCO Chair for Comparative Studies of Spiritual Traditions, their Specific Cultures and Interreligious Dialogue, located at the St. Petersburg Branch of the Russian Institute for Cultural Research, was represented by: Mr Sergey Horujy (Professor, Head of the Institute of Synergetic Anthropology, Moscow, Russia); Mr Efim Rezvan (Professor, Deputy Director of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography “Kunstkamera”, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia); Mr Igor Kotin (Senior Researcher at the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography “Kunstkamera”, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia); Mr Alexey Khismatulin (Senior Researcher, Sector of the Middle East of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia); Mr Alexander Melikhov (Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Neva journal, St. Petersburg, Russia); Ms Svetlana Makhlina (Professor, St. Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts, Russia); Ms Ekaterina Endoltseva (Researcher, St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Institute for Cultural Research, Russia); and Mr Dimitri Spivak (Director of the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Institute for Cultural Research; Chairholder, UNESCO Chair for Comparative Studies of Spiritual Traditions, their Specific Cultures and Interreligious Dialogue, St. Petersburg, Russia). The UNESCO Сhair fore Сomparative Study of Religions, Mediation and Dialogue at St. Joseph University, Beirut, Lebanon, was represented by: Mr Louis Boisset (Professor, St. Joseph University; Chairholder, UNESCO Chair for Comparative Study of Religions, Mediation and Dialogue, Beirut, Lebanon); Mr Fadi Daou (Associate General Secretary, Responsible for relations with Islam at Middle-East Council of Churches [MECC]); President of Adyan-Lebanese Foundation for Interfaith Studies and Spiritual Solidarity, Beirut, Lebanon); and Ms Nayla Tabbara (Coordinator of programs in Science of Religions, Faculty of Religious Sciences, Saint Joseph University, Beirut, Lebanon).
